Cell Towers

We've come to depend on cell phones and expect them to do more and more for us. Cell phone companies need cell towers to deliver their growing number of services.

Industry Canada regulates cell companies in terms of their use of radio frequency spectrum and the siting of cell towers. It has established a standard called "Safety Code 6," which cell operators are required to meet. However, Safety Code 6 has among the least stringent standards in the world, and it does not address the critical issue of long term exposure to low level intensity microwave radiation emitted by cell towers.

In terms of the siting of cell towers, Industry Canada does not rule out approving cell towers anywhere and everywhere. This means that the cell industry's regulator does not rule out locating cell towers near where families live, and where children play and go to school.

It also means that Industry Canada depends entirely on an inadequate standard of safety to protect children and families.

Merry Christmas Mr. MacFarlane

Letter re New Telus tower in Nanaimo, B.C. Bruce MacFarlane is Manager of Municipal Affairs at Alcatel-Lucent

"I congratulate you on choosing Cadillac Place in the middle of an industrial site to place your new 60-meter Telus microwave telecommunications tower with Alcatel-Lucent antenna.

"However, I do hope you realize you will be irradiating a brand-new old folks home, a veterinary clinic, chiropractic clinic, two shopping malls, a fish packing plant, and a brand-new housing development with microwave radiation--a Class 2B carcinogen, according to the World Health Organization--and no doubt setting off some kind of harmonic interference with the nearby Hydro substation which will undoubtedly amplify the carcinogenic and mutagenic effects of your microwave antennas . . .

"You have no right to subject me to known carcinogens without my informed written consent; only my physician has that right and only if I give it to him. I have not given you this consent, and to my knowledge, neither has anyone else.

"If you, Mr. MacFarlane, want to sit inside a microwave oven (aka radar range) turned on Low for the rest of your life, go right ahead. I want no part of it. None. And you have no right to force it upon me . . .
